Run is a tense, non-stop ride that revolves around Allen’s character, Chloe. The character is a young woman who has spent most of her life in ill health. Chloe hopes to leave home for college, but this would also mean leaving behind her protective mother, Diane, portrayed by Sarah Paulson. As the movie progresses, the audience is given reason to wonder if Paulson’s character truly has her daughter’s best interests at heart.
Kiera Allen studied the Meisner approach to acting with Maggie Flanigan studio, as a student of their Meisner summer program. The studio’s Six-Week Meisner Summer Intensive program introduces an actor to the first third of the Acting 1 Meisner Technique, while experiencing (in six weeks) the rigors of serious professional actor training. The studio would like to highlight Kiera being cast in the lead role and also the fact that this is the first time in 70 years that a movie featured an actor in a wheelchair. “It feels like it’s going to be the first time a lot of people in my generation ever see a real wheelchair user on screen playing a wheelchair user. That’s a huge honor,” Allen told The New York Times. “This is not a girl who’s made to be a victim or who’s only there to inform another character’s journey. She defines her own journey.”
The summer program at one of the best acting programs in the world was indeed beneficial, as Allen stated that, "I’ve studied Meisner a bit but [had] no conservatory experience. In addition to Meisner, I’ve done a bit of research on different actors and different methods and the way they make things work in their performances. Something that I find interesting is that two different actors may have wildly different processes but they can both produce excellent-quality work. Meisner really works for me, it helps me to free myself. The class I did at Maggie Flanigan was influential for me so I feel free to take things from other techniques and other schools of acting. My motto is ‘anything that works.’"
Maggie Flanigan Studio boasts a proud history as New York’s most respected professional acting academy. The studio was founded in 2001 by Maggie Flanigan (now led by Charlie Sandlan), and it focuses on bringing the advantages of the Meisner Technique to its students. This technique was developed by Sanford Meisner and teaches actors to inhabit the personalities of their characters as thoroughly as possible. This involves letting their own biases and beliefs fall away in the process of getting into character This allows for a much more effective performance as actors react and show emotion exactly as their character naturally would. This technique is evident in Allen’s own acting, and it is telling that her performance resonates so well with the directors and the audience.
Known for its top acting programs, the studio firmly holds the belief that, “Talent is important, but it is not nearly enough. To build a successful career, the best artists in all mediums have a solid technique that becomes second nature and serves as the floorboard for their talent. It’s this belief that has given the Maggie Flanigan Studio the reputation for producing well-trained, professional actors who can craft a role. Trained actors know how to create rich, organic and experiential behavior, consistently. But equally important, our actors also possess a strong work ethic, an inviolate sense of truth and a passion for the art of acting: qualities we believe to be essential for a successful and respected acting career.” The studio offers various other Professional Actor Training Program classes which covers a range of elements, including movement, nutrition, film history, script analysis and voice.
